Many mobile phone providers in New Zealand have made the call to shut down their 3G services towards the end of 2025.
This announcement comes in light of the industry wanting to focus on and further expand their 4G and 5G coverage.
3G is the oldest generation of cellular mobile technology. You’ll Need a VoLTE Capable Phone
If you have a VoLTE capable 4g or 4G/ 5G, make sure it isn’t locked to 3G. There are a couple of ways to check this. You can follow these steps:
- Go into the phone settings
- Check the mobile network is on ‘Auto’ or the 4G/5G and VoLTE toggle is on.
OR
You can just check the phone signal at the top of the screen. If it most often reads 3G, it is likely that you have a phone locked to 3G.
But if you have the word VoLTE displayed at the top of the phone, next to the signal bar indicator, then you have a phone capable and enabled for VoLTE.
